Why Mammootty’s Re-releases Struggle to Match Mohanlal’s?

Why Mammootty’s Re-releases Struggle to Match Mohanlal’s?

Mammootty’s Re-releases: Nostalgic patrons throng to theaters these days as classic blockbusters undergo innumerable re-releases, a new trend in Mollywood. Post the great run of Ravanaprabhu—which was almost a riot in the theaters—Megastar Mammootty’s 1991 classic Amaram made a much-awaited comeback after 35 years. However, the reaction definitely was not what the fans and distributors had looked forward to.

Amaram Saddled With a Damp Opening

Re-release notwithstanding, Amaram is truly one of the greatest performances of Mammootty and a Milestone film in Malayalam cinema. It did not manage to pull crowds. It is said that the film earned a mere ₹7,328, which soon became a subject of ridicule online. All the houses had to be canceled in some locations due to no audience turnout, which left enough fuel for trolls and criticism in social media.

Troll pages mocked this with some comparing Amaram’s collections with those of other re-releases done by Mammootty Aavanazhi, which had earned only ₹1,645, according to reports. Other jokes included theater staff being “overwhelmed” counting coins or that Amaram had “defeated” Paleri Manikyam in the battle of lowest collections.

Audience Expectation Vs Changing Taste

Disappointment on Facebook was shared by writer Shaji T.U., whose attempt to see the film at D Cinemas in Chalakudy failed when fewer than ten turned up. Ironically, this is in the hometown of Amaram’s legendary screenwriter Lohithadas.

Success stories of re-releases of Rajnikanth and Mohanlal films like Devadoothan, Spadikam, Chotta Mumbai, and Ravanaprabhu have attracted bustling audiences across Kerala.

Fans are now of the opinion that instead of rallying behind serious dramas, Mammootty’s mass entertainers, namely Rajamanikyam or Big B, could create some buzz. The and hence the pathetic showing of Amaram emphasizes changing audience taste-incumbent viewers seem to prefer something nostalgic but upbeat over the melancholic energy of yesteryears.
