In an a recent Game Changer promotional event, director S. Shankar candidly opened about the the challenges following Indian 2’s release. He stated , “I didn’t expect so much negative reviews for Indian 2, but that’s okay. I’m now focused on delivering better work with Game Changer and Indian 3.”
Indian 2 was released worldwide on 12th of July 2024 to mixed reviews. The political drama was compared unfavorably to the original, with particular criticism towards Haasan’s makeup, Shankar’s direction and the writing. Critics also bashed film’s lengthy runtime, characterization, and the lack of emotional depth in the screenplay, while Kamal Haasan’s performance received praise.
Viewers also questioned the title character’s seemingly flawless agility and reflexes, despite him evidently being over 100 years old. To this, Shankar cited the existence of Lu zijian, a Chinese martial artist who was able to do the same at the age of 120 years.
However Shankar is very confident that he will do well with his upcoming projects Game Changer and Indian 3starring Kamal Hasaan. Additionally, the director also confirmed that the 3rd sequel of the film would only be released in theaters first. This comes at a time when there has been a buzz about the Kamal Haasan starrer likely to be released directly on OTT.
The film grossed a total worldwide collection of Rs 151 crore, which is bearly 50 % of budget and became the highest grossing Tamil film of 2024 by the end of its theatrical run. Due to its length of over six hours, the film was split into two parts, with the latter part titled Indian 3: War Mode being aimed for release in 2025.
Shankar’s next film Game Changer starring Ram Charan, S. J. Suryah, Kiara Advani, Anjali, and Samuthirakani all set Indian box office on 10 January 2025, coinciding with Sankranti.
