Dulquer Salmaan all set to portray legendary actor MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar in Kaantha. Dulquer Salmaan has recently been enjoying the success of his latest Tollywood film Lucky Bhaskar and he is busy in filmming Kaantha, in which he will play MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, Tamil cinema’s first superstar. The upcoming drama stars Dulquer Salmaan, Rana Daggubati, and Bhagyashri Borse in the lead roles and Samuthirakani in supporting role.
Kaantha directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, who is known for Nila and the Netflix crime thriller documetary-series The Hunt for Veerappan . It is reportedly Set in 1950s Madras, the plot details are still under wraps, but Salmaan’s role is said to be never seen before. It will explore the complexities of human relationships and societal norms during a dynamic period, 1950 in history.
Dulquer Salmaan is stepping into the iconic role of M.K. Thiyagaraja Bhagavathar is an Indian actor and carnatic singer, who ruled Kollywood from 1934 to 1960 with is blockbutser hit films. Bhagavathar acted in 14 films of which 10 were box-office hits and was acclaimed for his powerful, melodious voice and the ease with which he could sing high-pitch notes. Several critics and film historians consider him to be Tamil cinema’s first superstar.

During peaks of his career he was arrested in 1944 as one of the main suspects in the Lakshmikanthan murder case and spent three years in prison before being released in 1947 . Bhagavathar’s career declined after his arrest and died of diabetes at the age of 49 on 1 November 1959.
Kaantha is a retro-film starred and bankrolled by Rana Daggubati, Dulquer Salmaan under the banners Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films have officially kicked off their highly anticipated multilingual film project.
The actor is slated to perform in the Tamil period film Kaantha, in which he will play MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, Tamil cinema’s first superstar. The biographical film is set to hit the theaters in 2025 in multiple languages.
