With the wink scene in Oru Adaar Love going viral in 2018, actress Priya Prakash Varrier became an internet sensation almost in a day. Her expressions helped to gain her a place in the hearts and households of India, and many expected her quick transition to mainstream stardom. But the years passed, and that flash of internet fame did not promise many acting opportunities.
The charm of Priya and her screen presence aside, critics and audiences alike state that acting is more than just a pretty face. She has never really impacted the audience since her debut; hence, her growth is somewhat stunted. Many opine that she may find her forte acceleratedly in modeling or endorsements, where her looks and personality would be relatively free to shine.
Priya’s limitation was excessive exposure in the beginning. If she were to follow the Krithi Shetty model, who by appearing in too many media features had led to audience fatigue very quickly, Priya too had undergone that road of overexposure. Successful actresses in the South from Trisha, Samantha down to Nayanthara and Anushka Shetty, walked a slow path of balancing the “girl-next-door” charm with a tinge of glam. However, for Priya, there would be no such growth.
Now back after quite a while, she came back with GBU this year, though some sides in the industry have denounced it as closer to a sidekick and support role than a lead. The role was reportedly offered to Sreeleela but was declined so that she could protect her image as a heroine. Priya’s return might keep her visible but may also typecast her as a second or glamour role.
Whether or not she can remake herself with some good acting projects or fade away further will depend on her immediate career choices.
