Suriya Teaming Up with Karthik Subbaraj: Director Karthik Subbaraj is revelling in the success of his recent release, Retro, starring Tamil heartthrob Suriya in an intriguing role. A career interspersed with genre-bending narratives and quirky characters, Subbaraj has stood out in Tamil cinema. With Retro gathering steam, his next project with Suriya is already on one’s mind, considering the actor’s interest in another of the director’s scripts.
In a recent interview, Suriya had said that he is eager to work on another Karthik Subbaraj script. Mentioning that it is at a big scale and requires serious time commitment. Although the director had mentioned that he is ready to join hands with Suriya once again. He did mention that the actor’s present busy schedule can push the movie back. Subbaraj had referred to the script as one of his fantasy projects and hinted at a genre-mix narrative transcending creative boundaries.
Despite the mixed reactions to the film, production of Retro was fraught with a number of challenges. In the form of action scenes and location constraints. One of the technologically demanding aspects of the film was the 15-minute single shot sequence. A cinematographic achievement that required accuracy and seamless coordination. One of the major challenges in shooting extensively in the Andaman Islands was in dealing with logistical nightmares that forced the team to be adaptable. Subbaraj emphasized the challenge of shooting the gruesome action scenes of the film and extracting the best from the actors.
The director explained that a first draft of the script was already read by Rajinikanth. But in working on it, he desired the story to have a young hero and romance became the emotional momentum of the story. With Suriya’s versatility and on-screen presence, Subbaraj felt that he was the right actor for the film.

Though no official word on Subbaraj and Suriya’s next collaboration has been released. The director’s love for the actor and the two’s success in Retro leads us to believe that there might be another one in the works. Fans of the two actors are eagerly awaiting word of this possible film endeavor. Hoping to see another out-of-the-box classic from the two.
