The trailer of director Mani Ratnam’s new film Thug Life has caused a storm after revealing intimate scenes. With 70-year-old Kamal Haasan alongside Trisha Krishnan and Abhirami, both 42 years old. While the audience is waiting with anticipation for the movie, others have questioned the age gap between the actors. Kamal Hassan brutally trolled and it has become a heated controversy on the internet.
The May 17, 2025 trailer includes Kamal Haasan in a romantic scene with Trisha and a lip lock with Abhirami. These scenes have been met with a divided reaction from the audience. Some questioned the necessity for such scenes given the big age difference between the actors.
The internet quickly reacted to the trailer, with Redditors uploading screenshots of the scenes and complaining. Redditors uploaded reactions ranging from irony-filled comments like “Only 30 years apart. Practically soulmates!” to protests about older actors being cast with much younger co-stars.
Others defended the scenes, claiming the story of the movie pardons the relationships and that acting needs to reflect diverse stories.
It is not Kamal Haasan’s first time playing age-gap romances on screen. He has played alongside younger actresses in movies such as Vishwaroopam and Indian 2 over the course of his career. Some fans see this as part of the business, while others believe it is promoting unrealistic portrayals of relationships in mainstream film.
The Film’s Premise
Directed and written by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life is a crime drama that spans decades, addressing themes of power, loyalty, and betrayal. Kamal Haasan plays the role of a powerful gangster, mentoring a young child who grows up powerful in his own right. Silambarasan, Sai Manjrekar, Ashok Selvan, and Nasser play other roles in the film, with music by A.R. Rahman.
Though Thug Life is guaranteed to be an action-packed movie watch, the Kamal Haasan and young co-star on-screen romance controversy continues to divide viewers. Whether or not such roles are needed for the story or are problematic in their representation are still being debated as the movie gears up for release on June 5, 2025.
