‘Kannada Born Out of Tamil,’ Kamal Haasan Remark Sparks Controversy

‘Kannada Born Out of Tamil,’ Kamal Haasan Remark Sparks Controversy

Kamal Haasan Remark Controversy: Actor Kamal Haasan recently kicked up a language. And cultural tempest with his remark regarding the birth of the Kannada language. In a public gathering, Haasan explained, “Kannada was born out of Tamil,” which has subsequently triggered a withering reaction in Karnataka and amongst language enthusiasts.

The Controversial Statement

Kamal Haasan, the perennially articulate intellectual with a sharp tongue. Made the statement in reference to the ancient historical relationship of South Indian languages. As per him, Kannada was born out of the ancient Tamil. Hypothesizing that the languages evolved through a collective Dravidian heritage. Although his postulation that Kannada was “born out of Tamil” was taken by most as belittling the distinctiveness and antiquity of the Kannada language.

Backlash by Kannada Circles

In reaction to the statement, certain Kannada politicians, scholars, and activists responded angrily. Opponents of theirs asserted that Haasan’s remark was historically factually incorrect and humiliating to Kannada pride. Some cited that Kannada boasts 1,500-year-old rich literature and is an independent language with its own writing system, grammar, and classical status.

Pro-Kannada groups staged demonstrations in various parts of Karnataka, demanding Haasan apologise. Social media was not far behind, with #KannadaNotFromTamil trending heavily.

Scholars Weigh In

Linguists explained that although both Tamil and Kannada are members of the Dravidian language family, they are not descended from each other. Instead, they have independently grown up from a parent or the Proto-Dravidian. Researchers urged respect for all of the languages without inserting politicized or emotional remarks.

Kamal Haasan’s Response

After the outrage, Kamal Haasan issued a clarification of his intention. He continued to explain that he had not meant to degrade Kannada and its history and admitted that he was very respectful of the people’s language and literature. He said further that Dravidian cultures have to be united, never divided.
