Malavika Mohanan, an actress from the Indian film industry, stoked outrage regarding issues of gender inequality. And show-off feminism within the movie industry in the course of a recent interview. Malavika Mohanan slams Indian cinema hypocrisy. She reprimanded a category of actors whose, in-front-of-the-masses feminism finds them harboring misogynistic ways behind their backs. Highlighting the hypocrisy of such people, Malavika had said, “They know precisely which lines to use in order to present themselves as feminists, very liberal-minded people, people who put women on an equal footing. And I have seen them, behind closed doors, become thoroughly misogynistic individuals.”
Malavika was frustrated by the continued existence of gender disparity in the profession. She argued that while some improvements have been made here and there, the core inequality remains. To her, most male actors are playing along with traditional norms by presenting a “mask” of understanding while doing the opposite behind closed doors.
Talking about objectification
The actress also referred to the South Indian film world’s obsession with the female navel as a true and disturbing phenomenon. Malavika, who works in Mumbai, was herself shocked by the obsession, which she referred to as elaborate. She went on to suggest that women actors’ bodies are zoomed in upon and objectified, referring to the cultural change in the way women are perceived and portrayed.
