Malayalam Film Industry in Turmoil: Producers Strike, Actors Oppose

Malayalam Film Industry in Turmoil: Malayalam cinema is in deep crisis as the Producers Council and Actors Association have come to blows. The Kerala Film Producers Association (KFPA) has announced a strike over financial losses, actors’ remuneration and taxes. However, the Malayalam Movie Artistes Association (AMMA) strongly opposed the strike and refused to cooperate.

Actors will not support the strike

AMMA’s decision not to support the team led to speculations of strained relations between producers and actors. AMMA members held a meeting in Kochi on February 24. The meeting was attended by Mohanlal, Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, Manju Pillai, Tovino Thomas, Basil Joseph, Biju Menon and several other actors. The members decided that they would not support the strike.

Sharing a statement, the Actors Union said, ‘AMMA members have decided not to support the strike called by a section of Malayalam filmmakers. The meeting also assessed that the film industry, which is already going through a severe financial crisis, is being dragged into an unnecessary strike due to the obstinacy of a few people, which will further cripple not only the financial sector but also many workers dependent on the film.’

Major problems faced by Malayalam producers

The Malayalam film industry is experiencing turmoil due to financial difficulties, high actor salaries, and government-imposed entertainment taxes. Producers have initiated a strike, while actors’ associations are opposing it, leading to significant unrest and division within the industry.

The Malayalam film industry has been operating at low costs all these years. However, the last few years have seen a surge in budgets, a hike in actors’ salaries and the OTT crisis. Earlier, producer G Suresh Kumar spoke to the media about the problems faced by Malayalam producers. The proposal for an industry-wide strike was criticised by producer Antony Perumbavoor, who produced Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran‘s L2: Empuraan.
