Ravanaprabhu: This phenomenon of Mohanlal completely ruling the Malayalam box office with his re-releases has, in invitation of a fanfare, been proven again, as his films consistently pulled large audiences to theaters. A little less than that would be “Chhota Mumbai,” which was a decent box-office return; but the current re-release of yet another Mohanlal classic seems to be generating even bigger buzz. Released last Friday into the halls, Ranjith’s debut venture as director, the 2001 film “Raavanaprabhu,” has created a fervor of anticipation among fans. The advance bookings seemed to reflect this, and the opening-day collections were impressive.
What is remarkable about this re-release is its performance in the second day, which has surpassed the earnings in the first day—something rather uncommon for a film re-released. As per box office trackers, “Raavanaprabhu” collected between ₹67-70 lakh on its first day in Kerala, while collections on its second day have shown an increase to ₹71-72 lakh on the same scale. So far in its first two days, the movie has generated about ₹1.42 crore overall. With Saturday’s collections being added, it will be crossing the ₹2 crores mark in Kerala alone.
Lack of access to some major center screens competing with “Kantara,” “Raavanaprabhu,” was, however, buoyed up with additional shows in many theaters, responding to demands from large audiences. Get sold out quickly as fans opted for full experience-along with larger screens.
Along with his father, the directorial debut by Ranjith, who had acted with IV Sasi in the 1993 cult classic “Devasuram,” is this, namely Raavanaprabhu. Intense scenes between Kartikeya with emotional depths and action zeal with Neelakandan would have retained their appeal during all these years. Most of these iconic scenes remain celebratory in reels and social media. Like other successful Malayalam re-releases, the re-release is digitally remastered, with a proper enhancement to viewing experience and ensuring the inheritance of this particular Mohanlal blockbuster.
