Mohanlal’s Thudarum Beats L2: Empuraan, 2nd Malayalam Biggest Hit

Mohanlal’s Thudarum Beats L2: Empuraan, 2nd Malayalam Biggest Hit

Malayalam cinema achieved a box office record for the second time through Mohanlal’s new film Tudarum. In a shocking triumph, Mohanlal’s Thudarum Beats L2: Empuraan to become the second highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.

Mohanlal’s Thudarum Beats L2: Empuraan:

Released on April 25th, 2025, Tudarum hit the audience by storm and emerged as a blockbuster within days. The movie raked in ₹105.95 crore in India within 20 days, overtaking L2: Empuraan’s earlier total of ₹105.25 crore. Good word of mouth and a decent plot saw it through.

The Journey to the Top

The movie opened wonderfully, raking in ₹5.25 crore on the opening day and then ₹10.5 crore on Sunday. Thudarum raked in ₹51.4 crore in the first week and kept going in the second week with ₹35.35 crore. The third week raked in ₹19.2 crore to solidify its position in box office history.

Faced with stiff competition

Even though other big budget releases like Nani’s Hit 3, Suriya’s Retro and Ajay Devgn’s Raid 2 couldn’t match its craze, Thudarum performed quite well. The bilingual release of the film with Telugu and Tamil versions also contributed to a wider reach. But still, most of its collections came from Malayalam-speaking audiences from Kerala and abroad.

Mohanlal’s Unparalleled Box Office Legacy

With Thudarum, Mohanlal once again exhibited his gigantic power in Malayalam cinema. His last blockbuster L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, was a blockbusting hit earlier this year. Now Thudarum has taken that spot, ranking second after Manjummel Boys, which holds the top spot at ₹141.61 crore.

Now that Thudarum gets a great welcome in theaters, everyone is on their breath for it to rise even greater and become the all-time highest Malayalam film ever. Can it beat Manjummel Boys? Only time and fan reactions can answer this.
