Retro: Kartik Subbaraj’s Script: The upcoming film Retro is one of interest to hear about, because its making history has been unveiled. Contrary to some reports, Thalapathy Vijay was not the first choice on whom work had been done with the script. Rather, it was done with the legendary all-time actor Rajinikanth in mind. With the bigger-than-life persona of Rajinikanth as the point of reference, the plot was hugely centered around the action genre, with the guarantee of an entertaining and peppy storyline.
Retro’s journey was disrupted in a quite unexpected manner when the script was read aloud to Suriya, and he was interested in its idea immediately. But when they were in the middle of negotiations, the film started changing course. Suriya proposed a change from an action thriller to a love story in the narrative. His contribution was invaluable in reworking the script, getting more of the emotional and romantic lines but keeping the content intact.
Suriya, with his keen sense of script selection, posed an intriguing question during the course of things. He asked if the tale had been told to Rajinikanth, because the tale had initially been structured with the Superstar’s persona as the axis. The query is indicative of the one-upmanship combined with respect and admiration of the members of the fraternity of Tamil films.
The shift from Retro’s original script from action to romance exemplifies the malleability of storytelling. Where action scenes may have taken precedence in the first draft, the new narrative balances the emotional intensity of a romance with cinematic set pieces that will undoubtedly appeal to a mass market.
While more of the movie is expected, Retro has already generated some buzz of its own with its changing script and association with biggies such as Suriya. Everyone wants to know how the end product fares on screen and whether the movie still retains the glitz of action material in its lineage along with the romance-nostalgia track.
