Suriya Shivakumar recent pan India film Kanguva was released with high expectation on 14 November 2024 in multiple languages but failed to meet audience expectations. The Tamil-language epic fantasy action film was made with an estimated Rs 350 crores received negative reviews from critics, who praised Suriya’s performance, production design and cinematography but criticised the lazy writing, poor screenplay, editing and sound design.
Initially it performed well at the box office, especially in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi markets but later fell far short, due to mixed reviews. The epic fantasy action film received criticism for it’s editing and sound design from fans.

Kanguva was released in 10,000 screens worldwide across multiple languages like Telugu, Hindi, English, Tamil , Malayalam and Kannada. It grossed Rs 58.62 crore worldwide on its opening day. The Hindi version earned around Rs 3.25 crore nett on its first day.
On its second day, the film made around Rs 2.25 crore nett in Hindi. It grossed US$523,000 in North America by the third day of release, failing to reach the break-even amount of US$2,500,000 and facing a huge loss. The film faced criticism for it’s loud score leading to significant financial losses for producers UV Creations and Studio Green.
According to a source Suriya reportedly plans to compensate Kanguva’s tremendous losses . Given his strong relationship with producer KE Gnanavel Raja, who has collaborated with him on multiple projects, Suriya has promised to work on another film for Studio Green and UV Creations. It is revealed that Suriya has encouraged Raja to find a suitable script and director, committing to begin after his current films conclude.

However, Suriya Shivakumar’s next dream project, Karna, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, has been shelved due to financial issues. Recently Actor announced his upcoming film with south director Karthik Subbaraj, which is expected to hit the theaters worldwide next year.
The film’s digital streaming rights for its Indian South region languages were acquired by Amazon Prime Video.
