The director Kamal Haasan and director Mani Ratnam’s joint venture in Thug Life was a second after 1987’s Nayakan. In the Thug Life press meet, Mani Ratnam divulged that the idea of the film began with Kamal Haasan. “The very first thing that came was Kamal Haasan, and then came Thug Life. So it began there,” he clarified. This recognition goes to add to the immense influence of Haasan’s vision for the film.


Creative Differences: A Natural Process

On being requested to clarify their professional relationship, Mani Ratnam conceded that there are bound to be differences of opinion when two strong minds come together. He reiterated that such differences were inherent in the filmmaking process and in general make a richer movie experience.

Mani Ratnam stated, ”When we were working on the writing part, we surely did have creative differences. And that is totally okay because you will know that you are on the right path when you see this differences. And that is how a good film is made. And we never had a problem with that, We enjoyed working together’.

Kamal Haasan’s Take on Their Work Togetherness

Kamal Haasan discussed his long-time professional relationship with Mani Ratnam and how they would bond over movies rather than tinsel town gossip. He explained, “We were talking only cinema and no rumour—and that’s where it started.” This mutual respect has helped them transcend their differences creatively but maintain their professional harmony.

Mani Ratnam has called Thug Life “an emotional drama in the crime world.” He said that while the movie has high-octane action sequences, there are strong emotional currents running in the film so that the story never gets out of hand.
