Flops of Kamal Haasan: Kamal Haasan, a major figure in Indian cinema, has been honored for years and praised for his range and originality. Sadly, in recent years, a number of his films have flopped at the box office, even though they came with great expectations. After the disappointing release of Thug Life in 2025, let’s look at five honorable commercial flops that appeared in his recent films.
1. Thug Life (2025)
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life was one of the most awaited movies of 2025. The pairing of Haasan and Ratnam created lots of excitement. Unfortunately, the film opened with ₹17 crore on day one, but couldn’t sustain the momentum. The Hindi version only made less than ₹1 crore and because of piracy within the first week, its overall collections were impacted. Mixed reviews regarding the story and pacing also contributed to its poor box office performance.
2. Indian 2 (2024)
The sequel to the 1996 cult classic Indian (1996), Indian 2 had the most expectations on it. However, a delayed production schedule and a broken film narrative foreshadowed its fate. It did have a bigger opening than Thug Life (₹25.6 crore), but the film couldn’t keep cinema audiences engaged. Haasan’s performance was certainly well-received, but the movie could not recapture the magic of the original and ultimately fell short commercially.
3. Vishwaroopam II (2018)
While Vishwaroopam II attempted to keep the momentum alive from the successful first part. It was universally panned for being incoherent and written with a much weaker screenplay. The excitement surrounding the sequel quickly passed post-release, and it got lost in the shuffle of things, making a negligible impact on either audience impression or Box Office numbers.
4. Uttama Villain (2015)
This philosophical drama of a film oozed all of the finesse that defines Haasan’s emotional depth and creativity. Still, the directorial choice of narrative style made on-screen introspection lose something in mainstream appeal. This film moved too slow in tones that nobody was in the mood for at the time. And on-screen reflection seemed to drag and effect turnout accordingly despite critics appreciation.
5. Manmadhan Ambu (2010)
The expectations for this film began before it was ever marketed, calling it a romantic comedy alongside major fan-favorite stars. But when the film was released, it seemed to struggle as you could see the film was tonally inconsistent and the humor was not strong enough to attract audiences, despite the screen presence of player after player.
