Suriya’s new movie Retro, helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, has taken the fanatics and professionals alike by surprise. Releasing on 1st May 2025, romantic action entertainer is marketed as one of the riskiest bets of Suriya until now. With an engaging script, star-studded cast, and big-budget making, the query is: Is Retro capable enough to turn into Suriya’s Biggest Opening at Box Office opening?
Suriya has delivered some of his best blockbusters during his career. His last big opener, Kanguva (2024), raked in ₹26 crore on its opening day in India, which was his highest Day 1 collection ever. However, though the movie started on a good note, it could not keep up the momentum and lost steam. Some of his other big openers are Anjaan (₹16.75 crore) and Si 3 (₹14 crore), both of which were testaments to Suriya’s box office pull.
The Hype Around Retro
The word on the street and advance bookings preceding Retro have been incredible. Tamil Nadu alone has seen advance bookings cross ₹3 crore, expected to reach ₹10 crore at release. Santhosh Narayanan’s music for the trailer and songs has been receiving rave reviews, adding to expectations. The quirky retro theme and Suriya’s lookmakeover for this role have topped the excitement.
Directed by Suriya and Jyothika’s production house, Retro is a massive one with a budget of ₹150 crore. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, who will be telling his story in his own unique way, starring Pooja Hegde in the lead lady role, this movie also includes a starry cast featuring Joju George and Karunakaran.
Potential to Break Records
Given the huge pre-release hype, Retro can comfortably surpass Kanguva’s first day collections. But its success will then be in the hands of the people and word-of-mouth reports. With its novelty and star cast, Retro could well prove to be Suriya’s best opener in India.
Even as it’s early to determine if Retro will break records, the film clearly possesses all the elements of a record-breaking box office opening. Whether it fulfills the hype and becomes Suriya’s largest opener only time will tell.
