BCCI Issues Strict Guidelines After Bengaluru Stampede Tragedy

BCCI issues guidelines for IPL teams’ victory celebrations. The BCCI’s decision comes after 11 people were killed during the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s victory celebration. From now on, teams will not be allowed to hold hasty victory celebrations.

Victory celebrations require prior permission from the BCCI. Level four or five security measures will be made mandatory. Celebrations can be organized only after obtaining written permission from the state government, police and BCCI. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also said that security will be ensured from the airport to the venue where the event is held.

RCB won its first IPL title after a wait of 18 years. The day after winning the title, RCB had planned to hold a victory celebration at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. But the police denied permission for the Victory March. Things got out of control when more than two lakh people gathered inside the Chinnaswamy Stadium to watch the victory celebration.
Although it was an event for pass holders only, the crowd ignored this and tried to push through the stadium gate, which resulted in the tragedy. The Karnataka government had taken strict action after severe criticism was received against the decision of the RCB team management to hold a victory celebration without any preparations the day after winning the title.

The Karnataka government, which suspended the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, had also suspended the Additional Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and ACP. A judicial inquiry was also announced into the tragedy. Apart from the police officials, RCB, Karnataka Cricket Association officials, and event management company DNA officials were also arrested in the incident. The tragedy that occurred during the victory celebration also tarnished the shine of RCB’s title win.
