Test Captain: The team for the forthcoming five-match Test series and the new India skipper for the England series will be revealed today by the BCCI Men’s Selection Committee. Notably, the committee chaired by Ajit Agarkar has some important decisions to make, particularly in light of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s recent announcements of their Test retirements.
Next Indian Captain:
The biggest question right now is who will lead India in Test matches going forward. Most sources suggest that Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah are the leading contenders, while Rishabh Pant is also under consideration. Although Bumrah has captained India before, the selectors may prefer another candidate due to his ongoing injury concerns.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has strengthened his case by leading the Gujarat Titans to the playoffs in IPL 2025. He has not only shown strong leadership but also delivered with the bat, currently ranking as the league’s second-highest run-scorer. His consistent form and growing maturity make him a compelling choice.
Additionally, KL Rahul could emerge as a wildcard pick. Having played in English conditions before, he brings valuable experience to an otherwise young and relatively inexperienced squad.
New Faces in the team:
There may be some new players in the India A team if the selection for the England visit is any indication. Sai Sudharsan, a left-handed batter who presently holds the Orange Cap and has wowed everyone with his IPL efforts this year, is the most well-known name to emerge thus far.

Since Rohit Sharma is unavailable, the selectors might bring Sudharsan to England as an opening alternative. Another possible option is Abhimanyu Easwaran, though it remains uncertain whether the team management has enough faith in the young batsman to consider him a regular opener. Notably, Easwaran has been selected for the squad before but is yet to make his Test debut. Additionally, all-rounder Shardul Thakur, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed, and right-handed batter Karun Nair are among the other names in contention for a return. Ultimately, Ajit Agarkar will make the final call during today’s press conference.
