A sudden security alert shook Birmingham on July 1 when a suspicious package was discovered near Centenary Square, just steps away from where the Indian cricket team is staying. Local police quickly cordoned off the area, evacuated nearby buildings, and issued a public warning asking people to avoid the site.
The Birmingham City Centre Police posted on social media, confirming the incident and their immediate response. The timing raised concern as the Indian team prepares for the all-important second Test against England at Edgbaston.
A BCCI official confirmed that players were advised not to leave the hotel during the investigation. It’s common for team members to explore Broad Street during off hours, but the scare temporarily shut down their plans. Despite the tension, eight players, including captain Shubman Gill, attended training at Edgbaston. The remaining squad members had a rest day as scheduled.
Thankfully, the situation was resolved within an hour, with authorities declaring the area safe and lifting the cordon.

With the threat neutralized, the focus shifts back to cricket. India trails 0–1 in the five-match Test series after England’s dominant win in the opener. The second Test at Edgbaston, starting July 2, will be crucial. There’s growing speculation around the playing XI, especially the inclusion of Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested in the first match. The conditions in Birmingham might also prompt the team to bring in a spinner like Kuldeep Yadav, depending on pitch behavior.
Team morale remains steady despite the brief disruption. As the series heats up, India will look to bounce back strong and fans are eager to see if the shake-up in preparation leads to a sharper performance on the field.
