When we analayse Gill’s journey as a cricketer, the graph of his career performance seems to be quite fascinating. Gill was seen struggling to make a name for himself in the Indian cricket team, not too long ago. But now, this charsimatic batsman has secured his position as the Indian test captain ahead of Bumrah, Rahul, and Pant.

Captain Shubman Gill? Undeserving?

“You do not select a captain for just one or two series; you have to plan for the long term. We are hopeful that he [Shubman Gill] will learn and grow over time,” Agarkar stated during a press conference.

“Shubman Gill is the player we believe can excel in all three formats. He has demonstrated significant qualities over the past year, which we’ve heard about from the dressing room. He has shown promising leadership skills, and we want to give him this experience,” he added.

Why not Bumrah, Rahul, or Pant?

Gill’s selection as Test captain over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was based on several key factors, most notably Gill’s youthful energy and Bumrah’s recurring fitness and workload concerns. Also, Bumrah is now 31 years old. While KL Rahul could have been an option, he is already 33. The BCCI may have opted not to name Rishabh Pant, a veteran of 43 Tests who has helped India win crucial matches, as captain due to his inconsistent form since returning to cricket after surviving a car accident. Pant also did not perform well as captain for the Lucknow Super Giants.

We can’t say that, he is undeserving just beacuse he is young. Gill’s rise to the India Test captaincy coincided with his successful leadership of the Gujarat Titans in the IPL playoffs, enhancing the team’s prospects of winning the T20 league. His calm and composed demeanour, along with his effective communication with teammates, made him a natural choice for the BCCI.
