England Bags Hat-Trick Hosting Rights for Next Three ICC World Test Championship Finals

England Bags Hat-Trick Hosting Rights for Next Three ICC World Test Championship Finals

ICC Confirms England as Host for 2027, 2029, and 2031 WTC Finals

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed England as the official host for the next three ICC World Test Championship (WTC) finals. The announcement followed the ICC’s annual conference, which concluded on Sunday.

England will now host the summit clashes in 2027, 2029, and 2031. These matches will mark the conclusion of each two-year WTC cycle. The finals are expected to be scheduled in June, aligning with England’s summer cricket season.

History of WTC Finals in England

This decision builds on England’s consistent hosting record. The country already staged the 2021 WTC Final at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton. That match saw New Zealand defeat India to lift the inaugural WTC trophy.

In 2023, The Oval in London hosted the second WTC Final, where Australia emerged victorious over India. South Africa will face Australia in the upcoming 2025 edition at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Why England for Test Championships?

England offers world-class venues, predictable scheduling, and strong cricket infrastructure. The June window provides favorable weather, perfect for the five-day format. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has successfully managed past finals. That track record contributed to the ICC’s decision.

WTC Format and Global Impact

The World Test Championship was introduced to bring context and competition to Test cricket. It follows a two-year league format involving the top nine Test-playing nations. The top two teams qualify for the final, making the contest highly competitive. The decision ensures that cricket’s longest format continues to receive a global spotlight. England’s role as host solidifies its status as a Test cricket hub.
