Former Team India coach Ravi Shastri has backed Washington Sundar to become one of India’s greatest all-rounders. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri said he recognized Sundar’s potential from day one. “He’s the man,” Shastri said. “He can be a genuine all-rounder for many, many years for India.” Shastri’s endorsement reinforces Sundar’s growing status as a key figure in India’s future Test plans.
At just 25, Sundar displays the control and temperament of a seasoned Test player. Shastri believes India should have given him more red-ball opportunities. “He should have played a lot more Tests,” he said. “He can be lethal on turning Indian tracks.”
Shastri pointed to Sundar’s performance during New Zealand’s 2024 tour, where he claimed 16 wickets in four innings, finishing as joint top wicket-taker. He outperformed several senior spinners and made a strong case for a permanent Test role.
Shastri also praised Sundar’s batting, calling him a “naturally talented batsman.” He believes Sundar belongs higher up the order. “He’s no number 8. He can go at six very soon,” Shastri said. Sundar’s ability to build partnerships and score under pressure makes him an ideal modern Test all-rounder. Effective in both roles and consistent in crunch moments.
India faces a tough decision ahead of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford starting July 23. With Kuldeep Yadav also in the squad, the selectors must weigh Sundar’s versatility. Injuries to Nitish Kumar Reddy and Arshdeep Singh add complexity to India’s plans. Yet, Sundar’s all-round skillset could give India the balance they need.
India leads the five-Test series 2-1, and a win in Manchester would seal it. Whether or not Sundar plays, Shastri’s strong backing signals that his rise to greatness may be just a matter of time.
