In a surprise turn of events, India has officially announced Ahmedabad as its bid city for the 2036 Summer Olympics, even though the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has paused the selection process.
A high-level delegation from India, including representatives from the Union Sports Ministry, Gujarat government, and Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, met IOC officials in Lausanne this week. The goal was to present India’s Olympic vision and reaffirm commitment, despite the halt declared by newly-appointed IOC chief Kirsty Coventry.
While speculation has long surrounded India’s Olympic ambitions, this is the first formal confirmation that Ahmedabad is the chosen city. According to officials, hosting the Olympics would act as a “generational springboard” for India’s youth and economy. They emphasized how the Games could inspire more than 600 million young Indians.
Ahmedabad is already preparing through large-scale infrastructure development, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and other sports venues. A multi-city model is also being discussed, involving cities like Bhubaneswar, Pune, Goa, and Mumbai.
While the IOC recently announced a pause in selecting new Olympic host cities, India has chosen to keep moving forward. The IOC’s working group will now re-evaluate how and when future Games hosts are picked. Still, India’s move puts it ahead of other interested nations such as Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Chile.
Union and state officials believe India’s early push could help shape the next stage of the Olympic bid process. PT Usha said the event would not only be historic for Indian sport but also carry deep cultural meaning. The vision echoes the Indian principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” the world is one family.
