First Series after Rohit and Virat Retirement
The upcoming India vs England Test series grabbed all the headlines after seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from the Tests. A lot of speculation was made about who India’s future captain will be and how team selection is done. The BCCI answered all the assumptions when it announced the squad for the India vs England Men’s Test series.
Gill takes charge
As expected, the stylish opener Shubhman Gill is appointed captain to lead the Indian side touring England for five Test matches. Rishabh Pant is chosen to be his deputy. It’s a test of batting prowess and leadership skill for Gill, who replaces Rohit Sharma as skipper and opener. The 18-member exciting squad also features a few surprises and new names. On the whole, the team looks solid with a combination of power, grit, and determination.
Mix of Young & Experienced
Yashasvi Jaiswal continues to cement his place as an opener. Sai Sudarshan and Abhimanyu Easwaran are all set to make their debuts. Sai Sudarshan has been consistent in the ongoing IPL and played a crucial role alongside Gill in Gujarat Titan’s domination. Meanwhile, Karun Nair returns to the side after eight years. Despite scoring a triple century for India in Tests, Karun failed to solidify his place due to massive competition, inconsistent performance, and other factors. After Virender Sehwag, Karun is the second player to hit 300 in Tests.
Nitish Kumar Reddy’s inclusion comes as no surprise after his brilliant tour in Australia. Additionally, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, and Akash Deep succeeded in impressing the selectors.
However, Seniors KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh, and Kuldeep Yadav will add experience to the lineup.
Here’s the complete squad – Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk/vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.
