IPL 2025 Suspended: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 was put on hold for a week by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) due to escalating tensions along the India-Pakistan border. The league is a huge cricket event that generates revenue for the board. However, it has encountered a barrier.

This began after a security threat in Jammu forced the cancellation of a Delhi Capitals vs. Punjab Kings game in Dharamsala. Despite the BCCI’s insistence that national security comes first, even a one-week hiatus may be quite costly. Let’s explore the meaning of this in plain language.

BCCI Losses During Suspension:

Every IPL game brings in revenue from sponsors, food vendors, TV deals, and ticket sales. According to sources, each postponed match could cost the BCCI ₹100 to ₹125 crore. Even with insurance, the board stands to lose around ₹60 crore per game. If they miss five to seven matches during this one-week pause, losses could range from ₹300 to ₹420 crore. A longer break or a full-season cancellation could push the losses even higher.

Impact on Sponsors, Broadcasters & Teams:

Broadcasters like JioHotstar and major sponsors like TATA are okay with the pause for now, but extended delays may raise concerns. Broadcasters stand to lose up to ₹5,500 crore in ad revenue.

The 10 IPL teams will also face losses. They draw earnings from the central revenue pool, which includes the BCCI’s TV and sponsor funds. If the IPL gets canceled, that revenue will shrink. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with two key home games left in Bengaluru, is already missing out on ticket and merchandise sales due to the suspension.

Remaining Games in IPL:

Teams played 58 IPL 2025 matches before the ban. Sixteen games remain, including the playoffs and the final, which was originally scheduled for May 25. The BCCI is now deciding when and where to hold these matches, so they remain on hold. If conditions don’t improve soon, the board may shift the matches to August or September.

IPL Restart?
The BCCI is closely monitoring acquisitions and the border situation before deciding whether to resume the IPL. If conditions stabilize, the event could resume within a week. Many international players have left for now, but they are ready to return once the BCCI gives the green light. Scrapping IPL 2025 entirely would hit the BCCI hard financially. Teams that rely on the central pool would face losses, and broadcasters could lose up to a third of their ad revenue.
