Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin expressed his heartbreak over the Hyderabad Cricket Association’s (HCA) decision to remove his name from the North Pavilion Stand at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. Deeply hurt by the move, Azharuddin urged the BCCI to take appropriate action in response.
Why was His Name Removed?
The Lord’s Cricket Club, a local organization, petitioned the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), which sparked the debate. The club claimed that the North Pavilion Stand was wrongly named after Azharuddin, who currently serves as the HCA president. They argued that he decided without approval from the Apex Council or the General Body of the HCA, both key decision-making bodies. In response, the HCA instructed officials to remove Azharuddin’s name from the tickets for the ongoing IPL 2025 season.
Azharuddin’s Emotional Confession:
In a media statement, he said, “It pains me deeply to say this, but I sometimes regret having played cricket.” He added, “Seeing people in leadership and teaching roles who know so little about the game is upsetting. It’s a total embarrassment to the sport.”
He concluded by saying that he became a target after exposing corruption within the system. He also mentioned that authorities stopped him from contesting the HCA elections. “That truth made me a target,” he said.

Azharuddin’s Request to BCCI:
Mohammad Azharuddin has requested the BCCI to intervene and take legal action against the injustice. He said, “I am determined to pursue legal action against this injustice. I urge the BCCI to intervene and take appropriate action.” He added that this issue isn’t isolated, pointing out that Sunrisers Hyderabad also had a dispute with the association over passes. He highlighted a pattern of conflict and poor governance.
