Pakistan May Miss Asia Cup Hockey in India – Bangladesh Likely to Step In

Bangladesh on Standby as Pakistan’s Spot in Doubt

With the Men’s Asia Cup just days away, Pakistan’s participation remains uncertain, and Bangladesh may be called in as a replacement. The tournament, which begins August 29 in Rajgir, Bihar, is a major qualifier for the 2026 Hockey World Cup.

An official from Hockey India confirmed that while India is ready to welcome Pakistan, the neighbouring country hasn’t confirmed attendance. Organisers have already reached out to Bangladesh as a backup.

Political Tensions Cloud the Tournament

The uncertainty comes amid rising diplomatic tensions following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. The Indian government responded with Operation Sindoor, targeting terror networks across the border. Amid these developments, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) cited security concerns about traveling to India.

In fact, PHF even suggested shifting the tournament to a neutral venue. However, organisers have stood firm, confirming the event will go ahead in Rajgir as planned.

No Final Word Yet, But Time Is Running Out

“Bangladesh has been invited in case Pakistan doesn’t come, but we’re waiting on confirmation from both sides,” a senior Hockey India official told PTI. “If Pakistan doesn’t want to come, it’s not our problem. Visas are ready.”

As of now, neither Pakistan nor Bangladesh has officially confirmed their position. Officials say the final decision needs to come within the next 48 hours, as match schedules and logistics are already being locked in. Organisers remain hopeful that the lineup will be finalized without further disruption.

Asia Cup Tournament Set to Go Ahead Smoothly

The Men’s Asia Cup will feature eight teams. So far, India, China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Oman, and Chinese Taipei are confirmed. The final team slot hangs in balance.
