Prime Minister Narendra Modi met members of Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning cricket team on Saturday. He said the victory captivated the attention of many sports fans. PM Modi is in Sri Lanka for a two-day official visit.
The PM came here Friday evening to hold bilateral talks and sign several important agreements between the two countries. Later on Saturday, he visited the players of the Sri Lankan World Cup-winning squad, which won the match in Lahore by seven wickets over the Australian team captained by Mark Taylor.
On his official X account, he wrote, “Cricket connect! Delighted to interact with members of the 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team, which won the World Cup that year. This team captured the imagination of countless sports lovers!”

PM Modi was given a memento on the occasion by the members of the winning team, which included Kumara Dharmasena, Aravinda de Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Upul Chandana, and Marvan Atapattu. “PM @narendramodi spoke with the 1996 Sri Lankan cricket team, which took home the World Cup, in Colombo. The PM’s official account posted pictures of the encounter along with the caption, “Here are a few glimpses from their interaction.”
With Aravinda batting an undefeated 107. Sri Lanka, captained by Arjuna Ranatunga, defeated Australia’s 241/7 for the loss of just three wickets in the final. Which was contested on March 17 at the Gaddafi Stadium.
