India-Australia ODI: BCCI has now made an official announcement about the tour of Australia by the Indian squad in October-November. Three ODIs and five T20Is will be played in this series.
In an important announcement, young batting star Shubman Gill has been appointed captain of Team India’s ODI squad for the tour. He has had a considerable run with the bat in the last two years, and this would be his first big leadership role in senior international cricket. One of the reasons behind his appointment is seen to be part of India’s dealings in nurturing future leaders while phasing out senior players steadily.
The first three ODIs will be a crucial point for India to establish themselves to the Australian conditions. Following the ODIs, the both the teams will face each other in five T20Is, which both teams will view as strong in their preparation for the T20 World Cup in 2024. Each series will attract global attention because of the rivalry that exists between the two teams.
Selector(s) seem to be attempting to create a mix of youth and experience; with several senior players being rested, all eyes will be on Gill’s captaincy and the performance of the young players who are expected to earn their spots ahead of a busy international calendar.
There are high expectations in Gill’s favor from the fans and pundits since his temperament, cricketing acumen, and experience at the top order all make him a natural leader; not just the results, Gill’s captaincy would be closely monitored on how well he operates in the pressure cooker that the Australian conditions can be.
