Golden Comeback in Portugal

Murali Sreeshankar returned to international competition in style. The Indian long jumper won gold Medals at the Meeting Maia Cidade do Desporto in Portugal. This event is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level series.

Sreeshankar leapt 7.75 meters in his second attempt to secure the top spot. He opened with 7.63 meters and followed with the winning jump. He then recorded 7.69 meters in his third round. His fourth jump was a foul. He ended with 6.12 meters and 7.58 meters in his final two tries.

Poland’s Piotr Tarkowski also jumped 7.75 meters. But the Indian athlete won gold based on his better second-best jump. Sreeshankar had previously marked his return from injury at the Indian Open earlier this month with a leap of 8.05 meters.

Now, his focus shifts to the World Championships in Tokyo this September. To qualify, he must jump 8.27 meters.
