One of the greatest modern-day cricketers and Australian classy batter Steve Smith bid farewell to the ODIs after losing to India in the Champions Trophy 2025 first semifinal. Steve Smith will continue to play Tests and T20s. His decision came as a surprise to many cricket fans who expected Steve Smith to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Steve Smith informed his team that he had played his last ODI match Tuesday. Australia lost to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 first semifinal in Dubai. With this loss, Australia is out of the tournament. “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a statement. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey,” he added.
Unarguably a fine batter in the cricket world currently, Smith felt that this was the right time to step down from the ODI format as the team would start preparing for the 2027 World. However, he said that Test cricket will remain his top priority. He is gearing up for the World Test Championship final in the West Indies followed by home series against England. He said he wants to contribute to Australia in the longer format of the game.
Smith’s test record is terrific and is one among the fab 4. Although Smith was not part of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad and doesn’t play regularly for Australia in T20s, he plans to represent Australia at the 2028 Olympic Games in T20 cricket.
Member of the 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup winning team, Smith has played 170 ODIs and scored 12 centuries. He scored 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28. He is ranked 16th in the ODI batters list currently. Smith made his debut in 2010 against the West Indies as a leg-spinning all-rounder. Wishing the batter good luck.
