Virat Kohli Accused of Promoting Gambling After Stampede

Virat Kohli Promoting Gambling: Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli was the subject of a police complaint on Friday about a stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium that left 56 people injured and 11 people dead. Social activist HM Venkatesh filed the complaint at the city’s Cubbon Park station, according to the media report. The complaint would be reviewed as part of the ongoing inquiry into the stampede incident and taken into consideration under an already-registered case.

On June 3, a huge crowd gathered to welcome the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team after their Indian Premier League (IPL) victory, the team’s first in 18 years, which led to a tragic stampede outside Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium that left eleven people dead and 56 injured.

Police Complaint Details:
Venkatesh also accused Kohli in the complaint of encouraging what he called “gambling through IPL,” which he claims incited the large crowd that resulted in the tragedy. The Indian Premier League (IPL), according to Venkatesh, is “not a sport but a gamble that has contaminated the game of cricket.”

“The most well-known of those who engaged in this type of gaming, encouraged people to congregate in one location, and brought about this disaster, is Virat Kohli of the Bangalore RCB squad. Thus, we kindly ask that you take action and indict Virat Kohli and his teammates in the FIR of this tragedy,” Venkatesh said in his complaint.

KSCA Officials with Temporary Relief:

In connection with the stampede, a Bengaluru sessions court on Friday sent four people to 14 days of judicial custody. According to a Bar and Bench report published the same day, Nikhil Sosale—head of marketing and revenue for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and one of the four remanded—approached the Karnataka High Court to challenge his arrest. Sosale argued that authorities violated his fundamental rights and arrested him illegally and arbitrarily, as reported by the BBC. He urged the court to declare his arrest unlawful and to release him from custody.

Earlier that day, office bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) petitioned the Karnataka High Court to quash the FIR filed against them in connection with the stampede. The court granted them interim relief and instructed the state police not to take any coercive action against them until further orders. The High Court postponed the next hearing to June 9.
