Ayush Mhatre: Nineteen-year-old batting sensation Ayush Mhatre will lead the India U-19 cricket team on their eagerly awaited tour of England. The month-long trip will include two multi-day matches against the England Lions, a five-match Youth One-Day series, and a 50-over warm-up match.
Mhatre impressed cricket fans with his outstanding first Indian Premier League (IPL) season, scoring 206 runs in six games at an exceptional strike rate of 187.27. Alongside him, the 16-man squad features 14-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recently made headlines as the youngest player to score an IPL century while playing for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans.
Adding more wicketkeeping options to the team, Harvansh Singh complements vice-captain and wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu, who brings valuable leadership and experience. Last year, Harvansh made history by scoring a century in a youth Test match against Australia U-19, representing Saurashtra in domestic junior cricket.
Inspirational Story of Harvansh:
Harvansh’s story stands out as especially motivational. A few years ago, he had the option to relocate to Canada but chose to remain in India to pursue his dream of playing international cricket for his homeland. His father, Damandeep Singh, a truck driver based in Canada, shared this inspiring story with media outlets. Despite the physical distance separating the family, Damandeep expressed immense pride in his son’s dedication and resolve.
“After driving a truck for 15-16 hours, it’s hard to even wake up from a phone’s vibration,” Damandeep said over the phone from Brampton. “However, receiving so many congratulatory messages feels wonderful. It brings back memories of when Harvansh said ‘no’ to moving to Canada. He stayed determined, and now he’s living his dream.”
Harvansh’s Inspiration in Cricket:
Harvansh grew up admiring Yuvraj Singh, the renowned all-round player from India. Harvansh adopted a left-handed batting style after being influenced by Yuvraj’s approach, according to his father. “My older brother and I enjoyed playing cricket on a casual basis. I enrolled Harvansh when he was six years old in 2012, when the Saurashtra Cricket Association launched an academy close to our town. I taught him how to keep wickets, but Yuvraj made him switch to left-hand batting. He was enamored with the footage of Yuvraj hitting six sixes off Stuart Broad, even though he never witnessed Yuvraj at his best, Damandeep revealed.
