AI Showdown: Elon Musk Slams GPT-5, Says Grok 4 Still ‘Most Powerful’

Musk Takes Aim at GPT-5

Elon Musk didn’t hold back after OpenAI launched its latest flagship model, GPT-5. The xAI CEO took to social media Thursday, calling GPT-5 overrated and claiming that his own Grok 4 Heavy remains “the most powerful AI” available. Musk also promised that Grok 5 would arrive by year-end and “give rivals a run for their money.” He called the upcoming release a “major leap” in multi-modal reasoning and performance.

A Warning Shot at Microsoft

Musk directed a sharp comment at Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, warning that OpenAI would “eat Microsoft alive.” Nadella responded diplomatically, saying, “People have been trying for 50 years, and that’s the fun of it.” He added he was excited to see Grok 4 on Azure and looked forward to Grok 5. Microsoft continues to deepen its integration of AI tools into its products despite Musk’s criticism.

Elon Musk : Grok Rolls Out Free Video, Image Tools

Musk announced that xAI’s new Grok “Imagine” feature allowing image and video generation will be free for all users. This sets it apart from competitors like OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo 3, which currently restrict video generation to paid plans. The feature supports text-to-image and short video clips, and Musk hinted at plans for real-time generation tools in the future.

GPT-5 Boosts Microsoft Copilot

Meanwhile, OpenAI revealed that GPT-5 improves performance in coding, math, health, writing, and visual understanding. The model will be free for all ChatGPT users, with higher usage limits for paid plans.

Thanks to its Microsoft partnership, GPT-5 is now integrated into Microsoft 365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, Azure AI Foundry, and the standalone Copilot app. Users of Microsoft’s Copilot platforms may see faster access and higher limits compared to OpenAI’s own ChatGPT rollout.
