Bumble to Lay Off 30% of Staff as Gen Z Turns Away from Dating Apps

Bumble to Lay Off 30% of Staff as Gen Z Turns Away from Dating Apps

Bumble, a leading dating app, is planning to lay off 30% of its employees. The move comes as the dating app industry struggles to retain users amid economic uncertainty. The layoffs will affect about 240 employees. Last month, rival Match cut 13% of its staff. The crisis is being attributed to the dating app’s inability to develop new features and attract users. However, Bumble’s share price rose 19% following the announcement. The company also raised its second-quarter revenue expectations as efforts to revamp the platform began to bear fruit. Bumble expects revenue of $244 million to $249 million.

Online dating companies have struggled in recent years to retain Gen C users, prompting management changes at companies like Match and Bumble. Bumble said it expects layoffs to cost between $13 million and $18 million in the third and fourth quarters of 2025. The company added that the layoffs will save about $40 million in annual costs, which it will reinvest in product development and technology. The layoffs are part of a new strategy led by new CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd, who aims to create a leaner, more agile startup structure.

Bumble Aims for a Comeback

Bumble holds a unique place in the dating app landscape by challenging traditional norms and empowering women to make the first move. Launched in 2014 by Whitney Wolfe Herd, a former Tinder co-founder, Bumble quickly gained popularity for its women-first approach. The app carved out a niche for itself by promoting respectful and meaningful connections. However, with Gen Z increasingly turning away from dating apps in favor of organic interactions, Bumble has faced user declines and business challenges. Now, the company is working on a comeback strategy to reconnect with younger audiences and revitalize its platform experience.
