Blending technology with religion is one of the latest trends. In a bid to reach God, people employ AI chatbots that generate responses from holy books and the like. This craze, along with India, is spreading to several other countries worldwide. It is a very serious questioning of truth that comes from the involvement of such an advanced technology in spirituality, faith being what it is, and asking the question, how would it be possible for humans to still have a spiritual relationship with God through the intervention of machines?
A 25-year-old student named Vijay Meel from Rajasthan didn’t manage to pass the banking exam. Under heavy spirits, he tried to approach an AI chatbot for support, called GitaGPT. The chatbot is based on the 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gita. The AI is aimed at delivering what Lord Krishna would have said. When Vijay questioned the bot about his situation, the response was to concentrate on diligence rather than the outcome.
This ever-true statement was the light that restored his vitality. At present, Vijay is making it a habit of talking to this virtual Krishna every week. He shares his thoughts with it just like with an ordinary friend.
AI is the new trend that is revolutionizing people’s prayers and their seeking of help. Religious people of different faiths are increasingly turning to faith-based chatbots for help. The chatbots have been programmed to be more helpful by referring to the most religiously authentic and pure doctrines or texts. Normally, in Hinduism, the physical representations of divinities have been the most important elements of worship.
AI chatbots, on the other hand, perform the function of the new spiritual guides for the customers. One American anthropologist, Holly Walters, better understands this monumental change. According to her, people who previously felt disassociated from society and temples have become united again. Hence, the AI acts as the new means that bring God closer to the people who want to worship Him.
Technologically based on AI, religious projects are very close to the general idea rapidly expanding worldwide. A new app named “Text With Jesus” came out in 2023. In the app, representatives of the users and the virtual Jesus can exchange messages. The Islam digitized book said to be the best and the most accurate to the Faith is “QuranGPT,” which is very straightforward in giving answers in line with the Islamic teachings.
On the Indian soil, the term “GitaGPT” is coined by the developers. The bot converts people to the wisdom of Krishna and Shiva. GitaGPT has been created by a developer named Vikas Sahu from Rajasthan. Just a few days into its launch, his platform went viral with over 1,00,000 users. He is presently busy with other bots and got plans to build a digital doorway for all deities.
Big spiritual organizations are also onboard with this new tech. The Isha Foundation came out with an app named “Miracle of Mind”. It provides AI-driven meditation and spiritual guidance. The app was downloaded over 1 million times in just 15 hours. According to the foundation, the technology is a new way of presenting very old wisdom and giving new life to it. The new technology enables the delivery of unique messages suited to the situation of each person.
AI technology was one of the features of the 2025 Maha Kumbh Mela as well. A multilingual chatbot named ‘Kumbh Sahay’ was at the service of the pilgrims. Travel and stay were the areas where the chatbot offered assistance. Digital Mahakumbh Experience Centre was a virtual reality-based endeavour. It was used to impart the feeling of being within the mythological stories to the pilgrims. Some caused themselves to be represented in a symbolic digital bath. They availed of video calling to dip their stills in the holy water.
