ChatGPT Now on WhatsApp: On Tuesday, OpenAI rolled out a significant update to ChatGPT on WhatsApp. In December 2024, the company announced the creation of a personalized phone number that allows users to access the chatbot directly within the WhatsApp interface. With the latest update, the AI platform’s chat extension can now generate images based on user input. OpenAI introduced this new feature four months after it expanded the extension to support voice and image input.
ChatGPT on WhatsApp:
The official OpenAI handle announced on X (formerly Twitter) that users accessing ChatGPT through WhatsApp can now request image generation from the AI. Although the company didn’t confirm it, GPT-4o, the same large language model that powers image generation in the chatbot’s web, desktop, and mobile apps, likely enables this feature.

The chatbot produces an image in about two minutes, matching the quality of the app and website versions. Currently, users who haven’t linked their OpenAI account to WhatsApp can generate only one image every 24 hours.
Besides creating images, the chatbot also generates content, analyzes photos, replies to voice notes, and answers text-based queries. However, it doesn’t support two-way voice conversations. Despite having a continuously updated knowledge base, ChatGPT on WhatsApp cannot browse the web or respond to questions about current or ongoing events.
