India AI Payment Pilot:
India’s National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and fintech company Razorpay have partnered with OpenAI to launch an innovative pilot project that allows users to make UPI payments directly through ChatGPT. The project, unveiled on October 10, 2025, marks a significant leap in merging artificial intelligence with digital payments.
The experiment introduces a new concept called Agentic AI, which enables ChatGPT to perform actions — such as finding products, placing orders, and completing payments — with minimal human effort. Users will be able to chat, explore shopping options, and pay instantly within the ChatGPT app using UPI integration.
According to Harshil Mathur, CEO of Razorpay, “Agentic payments are the next big step in AI innovation. We’re turning AI assistants from information tools into full-fledged shopping companions.”
This pilot runs on UPI’s latest feature — Reserve Pay, which allows users to set aside a certain amount for a transaction before completing it. This ensures better security and control over the payment process.
The program has Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank as official partners, while Bigbasket, owned by Tata Group, is the first e-commerce platform to test AI-based shopping and payments through ChatGPT.
Oliver Jay, OpenAI’s Managing Director for International Strategy, expressed excitement over collaborating with NPCI. He stated that the pilot would help explore how AI can work safely with one of the most reliable real-time payment systems in the world.
This initiative is expected to expand into more sectors once the initial phase proves successful. Meanwhile, rival fintech company Cashfree has also started working on similar agentic AI payment solutions, showing that India’s competition in the AI-fintech space is heating up.
As technology advances, ChatGPT could soon become not just a virtual assistant but also a secure and intelligent payment companion, changing the way people shop online.
