China Builds Brain-Like Supercomputer With 2 Billion Neurons

China proudly announced a new technological miracle. Scientists at Zhejiang University announce the Darwin Monkey which is the largest neuromorphic supercomputer in the world. This supercomputer mimics human brain functions. This supercomputer will advance artificial intelligence.

Brain-Like Computational Power

Darwin Monkey contains 2 billion artificial neurons. It also contains over 100 billion synapses. These neuronal and synaptic features enable it to perform human-like thinking. The supercomputer is capable of processing a complex task with a single operation. It also runs content generation and reasoning tasks. This technology makes artificial intelligence smarter than ever before.

Energy Saving Innovation

The supercomputer consumes only 2000 watts while its running. This is extremely low for such a powerful machine. It uses less energy to complete its tasks. Older supercomputers use much more electricity to run a similar task. With its low-energy cost, Darwin Monkey is an efficient tool. It sets the standard for other machines.

Advanced Chip Technology

Zhejiang University worked with Zhejiang Lab to develop 960 Darwin 3 chips. Each chip processes an average of 2.35 million neurons using a spiking neural network from the chip design, which includes specifying how neurons can communicate with each other in designs that mimic the communication patterns of human brains. The project is funded by Alibaba Group.

Advancing AI and Neuroscience

Darwin Monkey has made advancements in artificial general intelligence (AGI). It achieves major advances in areas such as reasoning and problem-solving, which have also key AI challenges. The Darwin Monkey system mimics human and animal brains. It also mimics the brain of zebrafish, and macaque brains. This greatly benefits neuroscience research. DARWIN provides a wider model for AI applications and behavior and opens a lot of new possible avenues for research.

Evolution from Past Projects

China’s start to Neuromorphic was in 2020. In that year, it built Darwin Mouse. Darwin Mouse had 120 million neurons. Now, Darwin Monkey is much more advanced and has 17 times the neurons of DM. This details the incredible acceleration of technology in China.

Applications for Smarter Machines

Darwin Monkey advances smarter machines. It is superior at logical thought and could figure out math problems quickly. It could use a supercomputer to create content quick and internalize the framework so foreign technologies are less depended upon installing China as the leader in AI.

Global Technology Impact

Darwin Monkey is the new leader in neuromorphics beyond Intel’s Hala Point. Hala Point had 1.15 billion neurons, and Darwin Monkey has more than twice that as does, essentially every advancement project that China completes, which provides evidence that China is shaping the future of AI with their investments, the implications of this technology could disrupt many industries.

Future of Intelligent Systems

This supercomputer extends machine learning capabilities enhancing robotics, medical researchers, Darwin Monkey models the human brain in that it processes data similar to the binary states of Moore’s Law using non-continuous binary states which ensure speed and efficiency.
