Google Maps Misroute Leads to Tragedy: 3 Dead, Child Missing After Van Swept Away

When GPS Goes Wrong

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Google Maps allegedly misdirected a van carrying a family onto a closed bridge in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, resulting in the deaths of three people and the disappearance of a child. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday as the family was returning from a religious trip to Bhilwara.

Following the map’s directions, the driver attempted to cross the Somi-Upreda Bridge, unaware that it had been closed for months. With no signage or alerts on the app, the van was driven into rising river waters, eventually getting swept away by the strong currents of the Banas River.

No Warning, No Roadblock

Locals say no digital warning or detour was shown on the navigation app, even though the bridge was not operational. By the time the family realized the danger, the van was stuck, and water was rapidly rising. Five passengers managed to climb onto the roof and were later rescued. Sadly, Chanda (21), her daughter Rutvi (6), and Mamta (25) lost their lives. Another child, Khushi (4), is still missing.

Rescues and Rising Questions

Police and local teams launched an overnight rescue using boats, guided by flashlight signals from the stranded survivors. The bodies of three victims have been recovered, and search efforts for the missing child continue. The incident raises serious questions about the reliability of real-time navigation apps like Google Maps in rural or flood-prone areas, especially when infrastructure changes are not promptly updated.

Not the Only Incident

Shockingly, a separate tragedy occurred the same day in Jalore district, where six youths were swept away by the Sukdi River. Their vehicle and belongings were found by the riverbank. Three bodies have been recovered; three others are still missing.

With GPS-based services becoming a daily necessity, experts emphasize the need to cross-check digital directions with local information, particularly during the monsoon when road conditions change quickly. The incident also underscores the importance of maintaining clear, up-to-date road signs.
