AI-Powered Language Learning Comes to Google Translate

Google is taking a big step in language learning with its latest update to the Google Translate app. The app now uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help users learn new languages. With the new AI-powered feature, Google Translate is positioning itself as a competitor to popular language-learning apps like Duolingo.

Personalized Learning with AI

Google Translate now offers a “Practice” feature that tailors language lessons to the user’s needs. To get started, users simply tap the “Practice” button in the app. After selecting their skill level Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced they can input their reason for learning a language or pick from pre-existing options. Based on this information, the app curates a personalized learning program, including speaking and listening exercises.

Currently, this feature is available to Beta testers on Android and iOS, with courses for English speakers to practice Spanish and French. French, Spanish, and Portuguese speakers can also practice English.

Real-Time Conversations with Live Translation

In addition to personalized learning, Google Translate now supports real-time conversations between speakers of different languages. With the new Live Translation feature, users can converse naturally in over 70 languages, including Spanish, French, Hindi, and Tamil.

The feature provides real-time audio and transcription, similar to the live translation on the Google Pixel 10. While the AI doesn’t mimic a user’s voice tone, it isolates background noise for clearer communication even in noisy environments like airports.
