Google’s Tensor G5 Chip Fails: Pixel 10 Pro XL Lags In Gaming

Google’s Tensor G5 Chip Fails: Pixel 10 Pro XL Lags In Gaming

Google’s recent Pixel 10 Pro XL model using Tensor G5, shows mixed results. The CPU is comparable to 2023 flagship phones, but the GPU is far behind. Follow a recap of the recent tests conducted.

Overview of Tensor G5 Performance

Google has recently released its Pixel 10 series. These phones are powered by a chip called Tensor G5. A Reddit user conducted some tests on the Pixel 10 Pro XL. They used the AnTuTu benchmarking app to measure the benchmark results. The benchmark results overall were 1,173,221. This is similar to the AntuTu score as the Honor 200 Pro. The other phone it resembles is the Motorola Edge 60 Pro.

The CPU Performance Metrics

The CPU score on the Tensor G5 is 415,848. Its rival is the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, and is closely matched to the Dimensity 9300+ chips. This is an increase of 15% over the previous Pixel 9 Pro XL. It should be noted this is still not up to the 2024 flagship processors, and is similar to the 2023 processors.

Weak GPU Performance

The GPU is the PowerVR IMG DXT-48-1536, which had a score of 367,206. In comparison, the Pixel 9 Pro XL was 440k, which is a drop of 20%. Other phones such as the Tensor G5 matched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is a four-year-old chip. It is clear from this test that the graphics performance is disappointing and not what users expect.

Importance of overall performance

Pixel phones seem to almost never lead the pack when it comes to raw power. The Tensor chips emphasis is on AI features, rather than just speed and power. GPU performance will limit gaming performance and graphics.

For daily use, the CPU performance is “very good”. Performance in heavy apps may feel sluggish, but day-to-day use is quite functional. Google clearly prioritizes overall efficiency, rather than raw performance and providing more fun/impressive performance for the customer.

Display and Design

The Pixel 10 Pro XL’s LTPO 6.8-inch display is a resolution of 1,344×2,992 pixels. The phone supports 120Hz refresh. The peak brightness is 3,000 nits. With Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the display has protection from scratches and drops. The display delivers eye-popping visuals.

Camera Capabilities

The phone has a 50MP main camera. It features a 48MP telephoto lens. A 48MP ultrawide camera provides additional camera options. The front-facing camera is 42MP. The front-facing camera provides excellent selfies and video calls. Cameras have always been a strength with Pixel phone Optics.

Battery and Charging

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is powered by a 5,200mAh battery, which can provide enough juice to last the heavy user throughout the day. The phone supports 45W wired charging with a 25W wireless option as well. Quick charging allows the user to recharge their battery quickly to continue running the phone.

Price and Availability

In India, the phone retails for ₹1,24,999 for the 256GB variant, with the options for Jade, Moonstone, and Obsidian colors, all of which are currently available.

Conclusion

Generally speaking, the Tensor G5 CPU of the Pixel 10 Pro XL marks a minor improvement over the G4 CPU of the Pixel 9 Pro. It would be good to see GPU performance improvements in the future, as the Pixel 10 Pro XL has poor GPU performance compared to the Snapdragon Gen 2 chip competitors.

However, the display and cameras are the strengths of the phone. The features work well and make the phone a suitable choice for users focused on AI, rather than gaming thanks to the Pixel 10 Pro XL phone.
