India Offers Cheapest Internet In South Asia — But Costlier Than This Country!

Access to the Internet is now considered a global basic need. A recent report looks at broadband prices globally. Within the report, there are some unexpected findings about how costly the internet can be ‘out there.’ India has one of the lowest costs for fixed broadband internet service in the world. The report examines these costs in terms of price per megabit per second (Mbps).

Internet Costs in India

The estimated average cost of broadband internet in India is $0.08 (or right around 6.68 Indian Rupees) per Mbps price. This is due to some of the competition between telecom companies. When Reliance Jio began to provide broadband internet it lowered the cost of broadband, forcing many other major providers like Airtel and Vi to lower its prices and offer more competitive pricing. Indian citizens are now enjoying cheap high-speed internet.

Comparison to Neighboring Countries

India charges far less for internet than its neighbors. Pakistan sets its fixed broadband price at $0.53 per Mbps. This is almost seven times the cost of India. Bangladesh has a broadband cost of $0.36 per Mbps, which is already over four times that of India. However, the price of fixed broadband in China is $0.05, placing it lower in cost than India.

Most Expensive Internet in the World

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) offers the most expensive internet. On average, it is $4.31 per Mbps, because the lack of market competition has led to high prices from only two main service providers. Ghana has the second most expensive internet, at $2.58, and Switzerland follows closely below Ghana in third, at $2.07 per Mbps.

Least Expensive Internet in the World

Romania offers the cheapest internet in the world at an amazing $0.01 per Mbps. Thailand and Russia are equal in second cheapest prices in the world at $0.02 per Mbps. India ranks in an admirable 16th for world prices in cheap data.

Price Comparison to developed Countries

Internet prices in many developed countries, especially in the Global North, are more costly than the prices of the cheapest countries. The cost of internet in the United Kingdom is $0.36 per Mbps, Germany has an average price of internet at $1.04 per Mbps, and while the average price of internet in Australia is $1.05 for the same speed of service.

The average internet cost in Canada is $0.66 per Mbps; if that proves that the price for internet in India is much more advantageous for users.
