Instagram Restricts Live Feature To These Users, Check Out New Rules

Instagram has changed the rules around its Live feature. Users must have at least 1,000 followers, and their accounts must be public to send a Live stream.

Earlier Live Rules:

Previously, Instagram had allowed users to do Live streams regardless of their number of followers or if the account was public or private. Even people with zero followers could create a Live stream.

What If I’m Ineligible?

Users that cannot create a Live stream will be prompted when they go to start a Live stream letting them know that they cannot access that feature. It will state that their account is ineligible for this feature. The prompt says, “Your account is no longer eligible for Live. We’ve changed the requirements. You must have a public account with 1,000 followers to create live videos.”

Like TikTok Policy:
Instagram’s new rules are similar to TikTok’s rules. TikTok requires you have at least 1,000 followers to go Live.

Why Did Instagram Make This Change?

Though Instagram has not given a formal reason for the changes, many think the updates for the new Live stream feature is intended to improve stream quality and decrease abuse of the sanctity of the feature.

Some sources have suggest that Instagram’s changes are to generate less usage of streaming resources by both platforms, while managing infrastructure resources that support the feature.

Impact on Smaller Creators

The update hurt many social media users. Small creators and everyday users feel disappointed because they liked Live for personal conversations and community and engagement.

One person said, “I don’t even have a reason to bother with IG anymore.” Another said, “This is more about saving resources and nothing else. IG doesn’t want to lay down bandwidth for small creators live streams.”

Focus on Content and Advertisers

There are many users that think Instagram is wanting to focus on professional content and advertisers. One said, “They want people to use Live for content creation, and ads only. Sharing your life doesn’t earn Meta any money.”

Another said “This rule will just push people into buying fake followers from bot farms just to get to 1,000 followers.”

What You Need to Do

If you want to use the Live function now, you will have to switch to a public account and grow your followers to at least 1,000. Instagram encourages creators to spend their time creating engaging content to earn followers.

Conclusion

Instagram’s new Live strategy intends to enhance user experience, but in reality, it may impact smaller creators. Whether this rule increases or decreases viewership on Instagram will ultimately depend on the users and how they engage with Instagram.
