Radio was once our most important source of information. Although that glory day has passed with the advent of television, mobile phones and the internet, radio is still essential to our survival in times of emergency. The reason for this heroism is that radio signals can communicate ideas even during wars, natural disasters and power outages.
According to a report by The Metro, radio signals were the only thing that remained functional when internet and mobile networks were disrupted during the 2024 blackout in Spain and Portugal and the Russia-Ukraine war. In Ukraine, when TV towers were destroyed and signals were disrupted, citizens relied on radios for escape routes. Similarly, Palestinians in Gaza rely on radio for news despite telecommunications disruptions.
Experts say that radio’s reliability lies in its simplicity. It does not rely on expensive equipment, data plans, and weak digital infrastructure. Solar-powered emergency radios can continue broadcasting even if the power goes out. In times of crisis, radio is more than just a tool, it is a symbol of hope and survival. In Syria, Radio Fresh’s role in challenging disinformation and spreading the truth has been recognized globally. Governments, including the European Union, are now reportedly advising citizens to include battery-operated or wind-up radios in their emergency kits, along with food, water, and medicine.
Recent events have shown that even in this era of AI and smartphones, radio can be a critical survival tool in times of crisis. Foreign media reports that fear of World War III has led people to buy radios in large numbers. This is due to the fact that people, including social media influencers in Europe and the US, have urged people to include radios in their survival kits. They warn that if the power grid fails, people will miss important government warnings without access to traditional radio broadcasts.
