Samsung Breaks Ground with 200MP Sensor Featuring Tiny 0.5µm Pixels

Samsung has launched a revolutionary camera sensor. The ISOCELL HP5 is the first 200MP sensor available to the public. It boasts ultra-compact 0.5-micron pixels. This is ideal for zoom cameras in smartphones, so expect to see it in upcoming products.

A Fresh Format for Improved Light

The sensor’s compact 1/1.56-inch optical format is smaller than its predecessor. Normally, smaller pixels capture less light. Samsung is using new technologies to overcome that. Front Deep Trench Isolation increases sensitivity to light. Dual Vertical Transfer Gate captures more electrons. These innovations eliminate noise.

Sharper Colors, Sharper Photos

The HP5 excels in color accuracy and overall image quality. It has a new High Precision Microlens array. The improved microlenses capture more UV light than their predecessors for brighter pictures. A High Transmittance ARL dramatically reduces light interference between pixels. You can expect great color and clarity every time you take a picture.

Impressive Processing Speed

The HP5 sensor has fast processing. The AI-based Remosaic algorithm automatically reconstructs images in less than two seconds. You can capture full 200MP photos in under-home much quicker than current technologies. Plus, it supports 13-bit color depth, providing over 550 billion unique colors.

Better HDR and Video Performance

The Staggered HDR burst mode generates even better dynamic range for HDR photos. Smart ISO Pro enhances detail in virtually any light condition. You can shoot rich 8K video at 30fps as well as 4K at 120fps as slow-motion video. Full HD video can shoot at 480fps for super slow-motion.

Shooting Flexibility

The sensor allows strong zoom functions with 2x in-sensor zoom for wide shots. A 3x telephoto lens offers 6x zoom with no loss in quality. You can shoot at 7.5 frames per second (fps) at full resolution and get 30 fps at 50MP, or 90 fps at 12.5MP.

Tetrapixel Technology for Low Light Conditions

Tetrapixel technology leverages four pixels to achieve one larger pixel. This creates larger 2.0µm pixels if you’re shooting in low-light environments. It generates a far cleaner 12.5MP low-light image and can also take a 50MP photo using 1.0µm pixels. Regardless of lighting conditions, you can always expect the desired results.

Photographing in Many Formats

The sensor also provides an extensive variety of RAW formats to choose from, offering color depths from 8-bit color all the way to 14-bit. This allows photographers additional flexibility in post-processing editing. More importantly, there is the ability to take professional-grade photos using a phone.

Availability and Future

Samsung has already started mass production. We can expect it will be used by phone makers in the near future. It will mainly be found in telephoto camera systems, while some mid-range phones may use it as the main sensor. This technology will further improve mobile photography for everyone.
