A new cybersecurity report reveals alarming data. India now leads the world in mobile malware attacks. The country faces a significant surge in cyber threats. Mobile and IoT device attacks are rising fast. This trend poses a major risk to users.
India experiences twenty-six percent of all mobile attacks. This places the country at the top globally. Mobile malware incidents grew by sixty-seven percent annually. Attacks in India alone surged by thirty-eight percent. Cybercriminals increasingly target mobile payment systems. They are moving away from card-based fraud.
The United States is the leading target of world IoT based cyberattacks, accounting for greater than fifty percent of all attacks around the world. The vast majority of these incidents occur in smart home devices and networks. Many connected devices are insecure or poorly secured with encryption, making them relatively easy targets for hackers.
The energy industry is facing incredible threats. Reports of attacks to energy systems have increased three hundred eighty-seven percent. Other industry areas such as manufacturing and transportation are proving increasingly susceptible to attacks and continually increasing threats to essential public service and economies.
The Google Play Store has hosted at least two hundred malicious apps, accounting for more than forty-two million downloads from users. These apps impersonated normal productivity and utility apps, making them more difficult to detect on the Play Store, as they were located under the “Tools” category. Criminals have developed tactics of using these types of apps to steal user information.
In many cases, these malicious apps may also install malware and/or ransomware. Google cannot keep up with the threat environments, as malicious attacks will continue to reemerge until the specific perpetrators are detected. The only option users have is to be extremely cautious when downloading applications.
