Spotify Introduces In-App Messaging: Share Music and Chat with Friends Now Seamlessly

New Messaging Feature Makes Sharing Easier

Spotify has launched a fresh in-app messaging feature, enabling users to share music, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends without leaving the app. This update is designed to make Spotify more social, allowing seamless sharing and communication, whether you’re discussing a favorite song or recommending a podcast.

Available to All Users – With Some Limits

The new feature, available on mobile for users aged 16 and up, is rolling out in select regions including Latin America, with plans to expand soon to the US, Canada, Brazil, EU, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Both free and premium users can access the feature, which lets you share songs, playlists, and albums through direct messaging. However, group chats are not supported yet, and emoji reactions are the only available form of interaction in one-on-one conversations.

A Long-Awaited Comeback

Spotify first attempted a messaging feature in 2017, but it was discontinued due to low engagement. Fast forward to today, and with nearly 700 million active users, the company feels the timing is right for a relaunch. The new messaging feature aims to turn Spotify from just a music-streaming service into a social platform where users can connect over shared musical interests.

How to Use Spotify’s Direct Messaging Feature

To start chatting, tap on your profile icon and select “New message.” Choose a contact from the suggested list, and open the chat window. From there, you can share any song, playlist, or podcast directly. If you receive a Spotify link in another messaging app, you can open it and start chatting immediately. You can even invite non-Spotify users to join the conversation.

Privacy and Safety First

Spotify is prioritizing user privacy and safety with this feature. Messages are only allowed between users who’ve interacted through shared playlists, Jams, or family plans. The company uses encryption to keep chats secure and allows users to report, block, or disable messaging if needed.
