The National Payments Corporation of India has introduced a new capability. It enables merchants to accept UPI payments using smart glasses. The news was shared during the Global Fintech Fest 2025 conference. The broad purpose of this new functionality is to help with speed and remove the need for cash handling and physical card swiping. This will ultimately transform the landscape of making small payments in India in the future.
This new solution is very easy to use. Simply wear your smart glasses at the store. When you want to pay, scan the merchant’s QR code with the smart glasses. You can then issue a voice command that will authorize the payment for you. It will then finalize the transaction all without relying on a smartphone. There is no need for a UPI PIN to complete the transaction.
NBPI has shared that this implementation only presently works with UPI Lite. It will be a tool for smaller transactions. You will be able to use it to make retail purchases and pay transit fares, as well as to buy food and make purchases at local shops. It is designed to help encourage convenience with low-value payments.
NPCI has also made available on-device biometric authentication. Instead of having to enter a PIN following every UPI payment you will now be able to approve UPI payments using your fingerprint. Facial recognition options have also been made available as well. This will help save time by eliminating the step of typing in a PIN after each approval of UPI payment. This will be especially useful for senior citizens who may not be as comfortable using their smartphone.
The system will implement this biometric service under strict security rules. It will limit transactions to amounts below Rs 5,000. The user’s bank will verify every biometric transaction. After 90 days of not using biometric transactions, it becomes disabled. When the PIN is changed, biometric transactions will be turned off.
You can set or reset your UPI PIN using Aadhaar-based face authentication. The UIDAI FaceRD application will authenticate the new UPI. People without debit cards will find it easier to onboard. It simplifies the steps involved in registering for digital payments.
These features will not be available everywhere right away. Banks and UPI apps will have to ensure the devices are compatible first and that all security verification tests have been completed. It will be enabled gradually across different platforms. Navi UPI has already claimed that they have enabled biometric payments.
This will enhance and greatly assist specific segments. Senior citizens find it much simpler than entering a PIN. New users can make purchases using digital payments much faster. It will allow a seamless payment experience for small, everyday purchases. It makes digital transactions glucose levels of ease for everyone.
This launch establishes a crucial step in the development in payments. The relationship has been established with wearable technologies to integrate every day into finance. Payments will become more accessible and intuitive for everyone. India will continue to design the future of digital payments. The future of transactions is becoming invisible and seamless.
