Vivo has launched the Y50m 5G and Y50 5G as part of its Y-series range in China. The budget 5G smartphones feature almost identical hardware and design, with only minor differences in their base memory specifications. The main aim of the launches is to offer good performance and a long battery life with updated specs at a low price.
Design, Display & OS
The Vivo Y50m 5G and Y50 5G come with a 6.74-inch LCD display with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. The buttonless design also accommodates a 90Hz refresh rate and 1,000 nits peak brightness. The device has a 90.4% screen-to-body ratio and thin bezels providing a good viewing experience. Both phones run on OriginOS 5, Vivo’s own custom interface built over Android with features and enhancements predominantly aimed at Chinese users.
Performance & Hardware
At the heart of both devices is the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 SoC, a 6nm-based octa-core chipset designed for power efficiency and good 5G performance.
Both of the models can be had with 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage, with the base configurations being different. The Y50 5G with 4GB RAM is an entry-level device, whereas the Y50m 5G, which starts the base model with 6GB RAM, leans more towards performance.
Camera setup
Coming to cameras, both phones have the same 13MP primary sensor with an f/2.2 aperture so the quality is okay for general shots. On the front, it is a 5MP one for selfies and video calling. While the specs are very basic, they go well with the price tag and the secondary use of these budget smartphones.
Battery and charging
Arguably the major highlight of these two is the 6,000mAh battery. The phone supports 44W fast charging too, with Vivo claiming 52 hours of talk time can be squeezed out of these two, which would take precedence over fast charging for users that value longevity on battery.
Connectivity & Features
Both phones have all the connectivity options: Bluetooth 5.4, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB Type-C, 3.5mm headphone socket, supports all major satellite navigation systems around the globe (GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, and QZSS), one among three sensors: an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, e-compass, proximity sensor, and IR remote control).
On the biometric front, both the phones have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and face unlock options. Both phones stand with an IP64 rating, indicating dust resistance and light splash protection. The handsets are also SGS-certified with five stars in drop and fall tests.
Pricing & Availability
The Vivo Y50m 5G can be had for CNY 1,499 (₹18,000) with 128GB storage and 6GB RAM. The 8GB and 12GB RAM models are, respectively, priced CNY 1,999 (₹23,000) and CNY 2,299 (₹26,000).
The entry-level 128GB + 4GB RAM configuration of Y50 5G weighs in at CNY 1,199 (₹13,000), and the pricing doesn’t fluctuate for any other configurations as compared to Y50m 5G.
